Year 10 Writing Profolio

 The Gone Mysterious Island.

It was a mysterious and unrelatable island. There were trees talking and animals singing like human beings. The trees don’t have faces and the animals were just furry and cute. But no one imagines that they would sing and talk like they're just normal humans. The people were like fairies flying around and speaking their own language like their squeaking squirrels. They were small and cute little fairies. Every fairy has special powers. Some of them can control water, air, fire, earth, others can make animals listen to them, and others don't have special powers; they have their own ability to create and make inventions that are easy for them to use.

Each of the fairies has its own unique colours. Purple ones are the ones that control water, Yellow ones are the ones that control the sunlight, the green ones are the ones that have the ability to create a special invention for them, the orange ones are the ones that can control earth, Blue control the animals, pink can control fire and all the fairies call them the feisty fairies. And all the other colours control their own special abilities.

They are just us humans but they have their own way of life. Everything was going on well with their kingdom. But everything changes when people try to capture them for experiments and search what kind of species they are. Others tried to capture them and sell them to the people so that they could make money. Their whole kingdom was afraid of what’s happening to them. So the Queen of fairies decided to leave their island and go somewhere safe because it is a life-loss island for them.

The island was an incredible place And it is now a historic island. The beautiful green and colorful island was gone. The refreshing smell of the island and its happy people disappeared into thin air. It was unfortunate for the fairies but not for the humans. They were living a happy life and enjoying every single day with a happy smile on their face. They are enjoying life without them knowing they ruined other peaceful and beautiful living creature’s homes. The things they’ve done can not be undone.

Imagine someone destroying your kingdom and your people, would you feel bad or feel good? Because when we want to destroy something we have to think if it’s a bad thing to do or a good thing. Think clearly, we might not know that other special creatures are living below or above us. That’s an important thing to do before shattering other things like what humans did to the Believing Island and its people.

Close Viewing Essay

In the film Power of One, directed by John G.Avildsen. Apartheid was the main thing in the film. It give off two meaning but there's only one important meaning that a lot of people are focusing on. It is Fear/Separate, but the main thing is Separate.  An interesting character is P.K. Hes was an only child and all of hes family died. He is and English growing up in Africa. As he grew old, he wanted to change the ways of how the Germans are treating the Africans. He want a better future and that clashes with the film technique where there is a setting that match the concept and the dialogue and there's Mise En Scene in the film. He was able to escape from the place and continue hes journey.

Mise En Scene - is the arrangement of actors in a scene if a film

This is the most important scene technique the is used in the scene because while they were running things are happening around them. When they were running when they saw the school bus and Gideon said that there's only 2% can (African can got to school). Hes purpose of including the dialogue one of the most important film aspect when shooting a movie is to make us change the way we we watch and grasp on to the movie. It makes the audience feel downhearted and disappointed because they are being treated poorly because Afrikaners are trying to take over their land. They've already taken over their land and they are trying to take away their freedom too. It is similar to when P.K was in prison where there are a lot of african people.

Setting - Setting is the place where the film is shooting (eg) The Power of one was shoot is Africa.

It is another important technique it let people know the place where the film was shoot. The example was when the movie start there was an explanation of where the scene took place. The directors purpose was to show what the place look like and hes trying to match the concept of the film with the place. If you watch the film there's a sad and disappointed feeling. If you look closely to and try to imagine being a slave and staying in such a dirty place where our freedom doesn’t even shows it takes away the future of seeing a better place. There was part of the scene where P.K was talking to them in their language and after that they sang in their own language and the Germans didn't understand it.

Dialogue is explaining what the people are saying in the film.

The dialogue hints at potential aspects of the character and mentions things that may be important later in the film. Dialogue is the meat in the bread of the film. When they were running when they saw the school bus and Gideon said that there's only 2% can (African can got to school). Hes purpose of including the dialogue one of the most important film aspect when shooting a movie is to make us change the way we we watch and grasp on to the movie. When we understand the dialogue it makes us link to the scene and the audience think they are in the scene and experiments whats happening in the scene. This link to when they were running and Gideon said they can’t even read the Apartheid signs mean.

What Gideon is trying to say is that he wants hes people to learn English so they can understand it so they won’t get punished for not understanding the signs.

On The Sidewalk Bleeding

Describe at least one memorable idea in the text. Explain why this idea was memorable to you.

-Andy wanted people to see him as Andy himself, not a royal.

-Everyone who came across him didn’t help him because they saw him as a royal not Andy himself.

-Sadness because he was just a teenager

-It was memorable because it reminded me of how people get labelled in certain situations, they don’t see the person but the label -stereotype.

-Tako - Title, Author, Keywords from the Question, Outline of ideas

In the short written text “On The Sidewalk Bleeding”written by Evan Hunter. The narrator reflects on the story about a little boy who is in a gang and got stabbed. On his jacket the “royals” was printed on where people don’t see him as a “royal” and not Andy. A memorable idea is that people always judge and label someone who they don’t even know their background and their story. This idea was memorable because we always see something and then we judge too easily, and that really could put someone down. We shouldn’t judge other people, we should judge ourselves and reflect on what to do to correct what we do.

First, a memorable part is that we should focus on our life and others because we all go through different moments in life. In the text, there's a drunk man walking through the alley. He was an old man. He saw Andy and asked him “What's the matter buddy,” while he was asking Andy, Andy could not speak or move. He slightly lifted up his head and Andy smelled alcohol. He then smiled “Did you fall down buddy?” he questioned as if he knew what's happening to Andy. While he finished asking his question he said “You must as be drunk as I am”. He squatted beside Andy. While he was drunk, he mistakenly thought that Andy drunk same with him. After asking his other question, he commented "You too young to be drinking' anyway. Should be 'ashamed of yourself, drunk and laying 'in an alley, all wet. Shame on you. I gotta good mind to call a cop." Because Andy couldn’t say anything, he nodded instead; But still the old man was just just completely uninformed of the situation. The old man’s thinking that Andy is completely wasted. The author wants us to note that we should pay attention to our movements because it could also help out some problems. It made the readers feel insecure and now that they heard of this incident maybe they could be more careful of where they go just in case something like this happens to them while they are enjoying themselves.

Another memorable idea in the text was not judging a person by their appearance. We see this when a couple came running into the alley, and later on they found Andy laying on the sidewalk bleeding a lot. My understanding in this was that you/me/us/we need to help people in need not just thinking its a bad idea. The girl (aka Angela) was not a good example to us but in reality it could actually happen. During the text there's a part that a foolish thing to do was done in it where the girl (Angela) was acting foolish and saying "I want to go home, Freddie. My people will begin to worry," and after that she said “ Freddie, let's get out of here! Please!”. It was obvious that she really misunderstood that Andy was in “royal” doesn't mean he was different. The author wants us to contemplate that we should not act as if people in need are different from us. It made the reader feel sorrowful because it's actually happening in reality. And it's really making the readers feel hatred towards foolish people who only think about themselves and not seeing it from others perspective. While this is shown in the text, it is ill-mannered for them to just ignore it.

The last reason why this is memorable to me is because it reminds me of how judgemental people are when it comes to gender and identity. An example of this happening is when the cop was judging Andy,`1 because when he came to look at the incident he found that the “royal'' was printed on his jacket. Andy’s friend was not very happy with how the cop was talking about his friend. And she whispered quietly because she didn’t want the cop to hear her, she said “His name is Andy'' because the cop never said his name, he said “a royal huh”. Notice how he made it so clear that he doesn’t see him as Andy , he sees him as a “royal”. The author wants us to observe that even cops judge you and they can also be judgemental despite being someone who protects people from danger. I can totally relate to some readers that could feel betrayed because we all go around thinking it's alright because we have police officers who can protect us. But, sometimes we have to rely on ourselves for some moments in life. Relying on ourselves is probably the most important part of us being us. If other people judge us and hate us and not helping us that means that we gotta love ourselves more than anything. Helping ourselves to what we need and comforting ourselves when you feel like you need comfort from us. Why is this important? because all those hard times which we all go through no one's there forever to help you. When you were young all the way up to where you are now there was someone there for you and the person was you. You went through hardship together with yourself. Don’t just rely on other people and sometimes try doing great things for yourself, not other people because sometimes they don’t help you with how you live your life. It is up to you whether you can do this or not, it's nobody else's.

House, where a missing Auckland woman was found, wasn't checked for 12 days.

In the written news "House, where a missing woman was found, wasn't checked for 12 days, by Mina Kerr-Lazenby November 23  Cindy Li was reported missing from her home in Sandringham on Tuesday, November 9. She had not been checked by the police in the 12 days that she had been missing. She was 70 years old. When she was found on Sunday at a residential home near her home. She was found in critical condition as the police said. She was "dehydrated" and was sent to a Care Unit of Auckland Hospital. The first place where the police searched was where she was and where she went afterward.

A former detective said, that he understands the failure to check the house because it seems like it's an oversight by the police. On the other hand, police could argue that there are no indicators the house needed to be checked, given that it was locked and secure.

As the police say that Li remains in the hospital but in stable condition.

Reflection Section. - How Pearl Button Was Kidnapped

 How Pearl Button Was Kidnapped.

In English, we read a story about the kidnapped of a little girl. The little girl is European. She was kidnapped by two Maori women who were walking and they saw her playing in her house of boxes. So our teacher told us to read through the story and tell us the main point about it. He told us to find out what kind of kidnapping was it because the Maori women didn't do anything to her they were just showing her around the beach and collecting shells.

English Teachers Question -

What would the European think about the kidnapping?

Were the Maori women harming her?

Is it to form a relationship between pakeha and Maori?

Critical Literacy QuestionWhy are we/you reading this text? -The story could relate to reality because if people read the story they would learn some main points where it tells us not to go with any strangers unless we know them or if they look harmless.

 Effects of Drugs&Alcohol

In Health we learned about the effects of alcohol and drugs. Our teacher or advisor told us how many bad things that could happen if we continue to take drugs and alcohol. Why? Because when you are addicted to drugs or alcohol you can get in serious danger because someone might give you alcohol but you don't know what's in it may be strong drugs that you don't even know. Someone might try to force you to take it while you are drunk.

-What are the long-term and short-term effects?

Long Term Effects-

alcohol dependence, brain damage, memory loss, nerve damage, cancer, cardiovascular disease, swelling, and pain.

Short Term Effects-

blurred vision, slurred and confused speech, mood changes, thought processes, judgment, and concentration are impaired, flushing and sweating.

-What should we do if a person passes out at a party (impact for safety)?

call the ambulance, call their parents, lying them on their side against the wall, and put their knee up.

Hopefully, this text could help young people learn and know more about how to stay safe around drugs or alcohol.

Dawn Raids

 Reflection Section:

This week in social study our teacher taught us about the Dawn Raids. It was explained in detail how the Dawn Raids had happened. The Dawn raids were an apology to the Pacific People who faced such tremendous incidents in the 1970s where police were attacking our people and our community. It also says that some of our people are still living in fear and that some still don't forget what had happened.                    The Prime Minister invited three languages, the Samoans, Tongas, Te Reo Maori, and the English were also there during the Dawn Raids.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           “While no amount of rain can remove the bitter salt from the ocean waters, I ask you to let our spiritual connectedness soften your pain, and allow forgiveness to flow on this day,” she said.                                                                                                                                                                               It was a memory to those who were directly affected by it. New Zealand has offered a lot of help to the Pacific people as a form of an apology.  Pasifika people have the Prime Minister (Jacinda Aderm) sinscere apology.

Denzal Washington

The video of Denzal Washington Life Advice, it explains how life works for people that try to succeed in life.  There are some key points that he mentions while talking to billions of people in the audience. He said that there is nothing worthwhile than taking risks. He also mentions one of the famous political leaders who fought in civil wars. He said, *there's no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life that's less than the one you're capable of living. He also said that we should have faith in what we do and we should fall back not disappointing but fall back while still keeping the faith. There is success in your mistake and that there is nothing to worry about your mistake just keep doing what your goal for life is and don't give up because it is not an option to give up on something that could lead to success and that hope or decision lies with you.

Anti-Vietnam War.

 War.

The Vietnam War was a long, costly and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The conflict was intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Vietnam War song
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, why'all
War, huh, good god
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh good god, why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
War, whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die, ah, war-huh, good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) it's got one friend that's the undertaker
Oh, war, has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love, and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for you tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it
huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it nothing.

The song explains that war is not a right thing to do and that there's nothing good about war. Because a lot of lives will be taken and people will lose a lot of their loved ones. So that's why war should stop.

Japanese. reflection Section

This week we've been focusing on learning new words in Japanese. We have learned how to pronounced our body parts and learned how to match the colors and their pronunciation. It is an amazing language to learn. It was fun learning it. I got a lot of help from my teacher and other students. Japanese is not an easy language to learn but when you try your best to learn it'll become easy and understandable to learn. Without help from the teacher, I would have known how to spell in Japanese and learn their language.

I get to help other students too with their Japanese pronunciation and understanding. It is amazing helping other students. Japanese is an easy language when you learn how it works and how it is

Beatlemania Perpective.

Perspective For: The perspective for the tour in New Zealand was the youth of New Zealand.
The values of younger New Zealanders seemed to be changing as one era passed and another emerged. From this time, New Zealand opened up to the world as never before through television and the beginning of mass air travel overseas. Some young people began to look very different. Their love affair with rock 'n' roll started in the 1950s, became even stronger, but the look and the music had changed. Young women hiked up their skirts as high as they could go and traded in the bouffant beehive hair-do for the mod' look, inspired by British fashion queen Mary Quant. Brylcreemed short-back-and-sides hair, shapeless sports coat, and grey strides were the last things the male mod would be seen wearing. This was the first time that pop musicians came to New Zealand, speaking young people's truths and beliefs through their music. The music business was born with many starting to make money when future artists came to New Zealand.

Perspective Against: The parents were against it because they were furious about how they changed their young generation about doing inappropriate things. Since the Beatles became famous, their music was all their young generation was talking about. The parents were religious people who thought that their songs were bad for their beliefs and understanding. They would say that Jesus saves the Beatles, or God loves the Beatles, and they would ask,  Do the Beatles love God?. They think it's sinning or in other words, means going to hell. Costing lots of money for preparing gear and paying for concert tickets.

Ka Mate.

*What does this line refer to?
'Tis death! 'tis death! (or: I may die) `Tis life! `tis life (or; I may live) `Tis death! `tis death! `Tis life! `tis life!
-It means sacrificing their lives or they're going to kill the enemy or they are going to die.

*How was the Haka used successfully by the Maori Battalion in World war One and how the Maori battalion was viewed?
-It was performed on the battlefields for two reasons. Firstly, it was done to scare their opponents; the warriors would use aggressive facial expressions such as bulging eyes and poking their tongues.
*What is the Haka symbolic of now and where is it used today?
-The Haka is being performed by the New Zealand rugby team on the field. To start off their game.

Setting It Up

It was a mysterious and unrelatable island. There were trees talking and animals singing like human beings. The trees don’t have faces and the animals were just furry and cute animals. But no one imagines that they would sing and talk like they're just normal humans. The people were like fairies flying around and speaking their own language like their squeaking like squirrels. They were small and cute little fairies. The mysterious island is like a believing island. If you don't believe in it it won’t show up, but if you believe in it you can see the whole island like a fairytale island.

Ages ago there was a town that people believe that it is a town of a ghost, a town for people who died and became spirits. There was a couple who went on a trip and they got lost in the middle of the west. So they tried calling for help but the reception was not available. So they began searching for a place where they can get reception to call for help or look for a place nearby to stay just in the meantime. They were searching for a hotel or town to get help from. While they were searching for a place, a mysterious place was available at moment and it was the GHOST TOWN IN THE WILD OLD WEST. They were so happy that they found a place to stay while reaching out for help. They believe it was a good place. Until something creeps them out. When they arrived at the hotel there was no one there in the town, it was just the two of them. the place was dark even though the sun is still shining and still up. They search the entire town and suddenly they heard someone calling out their name and they thought it was each other calling each other name. They ask each other why did they call each other names. But they both said that they didn't call each other out. As soon as they confronted each other they immediately left the place and never went back to the creepy old place.

The Beatles.

 The Beatles.

Beatles
It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I'll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say you're going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I'll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright, oww
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
Oh, it's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I'll find the things that you do
It Will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright
The night that follows a very hard day. A day in which one has been working like a dog, and so one should be sleeping like a log. Instead, one cannot help but stay awake and spend time with the person who makes them feel alright.

We happened to work all night
The song's title originated from something said by Ringo Starr, the Beatles' drummer. Starr described it this way in an interview with disc jockey Dave Hull in 1964: "We went to do a job, and we'd worked all day and we happened to work all night.A HARD DAY'S NIGHT.
